Welcome to the Magic Deer, a place for diversity and innovation

Small confession, I’m a science fiction reader. I’ve read it since my earliest years, and my stepfather would tell me to quit reading those Nancy Drew books. So I’ve read scifi from about the age of 8. Still do.

And I remember—at age sixteen— that I had never read a vision of the future that included someone like me. But the point is, as far back as I can remember, I’ve been reading books by people who envision a future. And that almost never had me in it. And then, I grew up, started a career in academia, and then one day—discovered tech.

And it dawned on me. I’ve spent a life READING about the future, and here are companies who are actually BUILDING IT.  Are we building a future that has people who look like me in it? Don’t we want to build a future that has everyone in it? Is manned spaceflight somehow actually easier than building a diverse world?  I don’t think it is. (Or that it should be). And that’s why diversity matters. Well I think what I’ve just laid out is a reasonably good moral argument.  “Building for diversity is the right thing
to do.”

Magic Deer is about building a better future-- an inclusive one. How do we construct the future of work and workplaces so that they are inclusive and embrace diversity?
